Class Description: Students learn to lay a traditional gold ground for painting using genuine 23k gold and silver leaf for canvas, paper, and panels. Students explore gilding of embellishment of low and high relief with the use of a variety of mordants including oil size, gum ammoniac, gum arabic, and modern acrylic emulsion. The proper use of the gilder's pad, knife, and 'tip' is taught along with handling gold leaf in both loose and patent form. The Gold Leaf Gilding for Works of Art class, designed for Fine Artists, is also well-suited to those seeking to learn the Oil Gilding method.

Bio: Gold leaf gilder Charles Douglas began his career at Saks Fifth Avenue where he studied glass gilding as a member of the Visual Merchandising team. With over 30 years gilding experience Charles has been committed throughout his career to teaching others.. He is skilled in traditional water gilding, oil gilding, glass gilding, and restoration of gilded objects, publishes The Gilding Arts Newsletter and offers private commissions and classes in his Seattle Studio.
