Class description: In this three-hour class, beginners will be armed with a foundation and techniques to learn the art of modern pointed pen calligraphy. We will start by discussing theory, history, terminology, lettering structure and getting familiar with the pen pressure and ink flow, then move into warm-ups, practice strokes, lower case and upper case letterforms and full words.

You will be provided with high quality tools used by professional calligraphers to take home, including:

Layout paper pads
Japanese black liquid calligraphy ink
Straight pen holder
Ink jar & holder
Custom created instruction booklets

This course covers techniques and materials for pointed pen calligraphy (does not include broad nibs or brush style calligraphy). Coursework has been designed for beginners, aimed to equip you with the guidance necessary to begin your journey and love affair with modern calligraphy.

Bio: Taryn Sutherland Gross is the owner of Twinkle & Toast, a calligraphy and wedding invitation design studio based in San Diego, California. Her passion for arts began at a young age, with a background in painting and illustration. She studied Art History at the University of Colorado, and soon after broadened her experimentation of calligraphy, taking a great interest in the art of letterforms. She now applies these skills to custom designed wedding invitation suites, which incorporate hand lettering and illustration, curated paper selections to reflect their individual story and personality. She has been in business for five years, both designing and teaching, and has been published in several national magazines and blogs.
